The Department of Choreography at South-West University “Neofit Rilski” was established in 1992. Initially, the specialty was called “Choreographic Pedagogy” within the “Choreography” section of the Department of Music. Today, the department functions as an independent unit within the Faculty of Arts and offers education in two Bachelor’s programs, two Master’s programs, and one doctoral program. All programs in the department are accredited for the maximum period of 6 years – until 2027.

The teaching team consists of established professionals, distinguished researchers, artists, and specialists in the field of performing arts - Assoc. Prof. Georgi Garov, Prof. Dr. of Arts Anelia Yaneva, Prof. Nikolay Tsvetkov, Chief Assistant Prof. Stefan Yordanov, PhD, Assistant Plamena Moralieva, PhD, Assistant Verka Bozhkova, PhD, Assistant Silvina Vladova, PhD and Assistant Julia Yordanova.

The specialty “Bulgarian Folk Choreography” defines the professional profile of a specialist with a Bachelor’s educational qualification degree and professional qualification “Choreographer” in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”, as well as the qualification requirements for their training.

The specialty “Contemporary Choreography” defines the professional profile of a specialist with a Bachelor’s educational qualification degree and professional qualification “Choreographer-Director” in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”.

Forms of study

The curricula in both specialties have a duration of 4 years and are offered in full-time education. An individual form of study is also available, with a more flexible schedule for attending lectures and practical classes.

The Master’s program “Choreographic Directing” defines the professional profile of a specialist with a Master’s educational qualification degree and professional qualification “Choreographer-Director” in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”.

Duration of study: 1 year (two semesters) – full-time education – intended for students who have already obtained a Bachelor’s degree in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”.

The Master’s program “Theory and Criticism of Choreographic Art” defines the professional profile of a specialist with a Master’s educational qualification degree and professional qualification “Choreologist-Choreographer” in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”.

Duration of study: 1 year (two semesters) – full-time education – intended for continuing education of students who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in professional field 8.3 “Music and Dance Arts”.
