The Department of Music was established in 1976 and is one of the founding departments of South-West University “Neofit Rilski”. The traditions in the field of music education are combined with the high professional quality of the academic staff and affordable tuition fees. These components provide some of the best conditions in Bulgaria for the professional training of young people.
The programs in professional field 1.3. Pedagogy of Teaching in… were accredited in 2020, while the programs in professional field 8.3. Music and Dance Arts were accredited in 2021 by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA) for the maximum period of 6 years.
Awareness and originality are qualities necessary for the successful realization of every person in every field, especially in the arts. The Department of Music offers young people the opportunity to meet, study, and develop their professional skills in a creative environment.
The academic staff of the department consists of 17 full-time lecturers and more than 20 part-time lecturers. Six of the full-time lecturers are habilitated - three are professors and three are associate professors; there are two Doctors of Arts and fourteen PhDs.
The good cooperation of South-West University “Neofit Rilski” with professional ensembles and institutions such as Big Band – Blagoevgrad, Chamber Opera, Ensemble “Pirin”, Radio Blagoevgrad, and others provides students with excellent opportunities to apply in practice the abilities acquired during their studies and to experience the real stage environment.
The Department of Music has numerous classrooms equipped with musical instruments and teaching technology, two chamber concert halls, an organ, two grand pianos, sound equipment, etc. In 2019, a Recording Studio equipped with the most modern technology was opened for the department’s educational activities.
